GI Joe Missing in Action for 2016

According to a post on hisstank.com submitted after the recent 2016 Toy Fair, there will be no main action figure line retail presence of the Real American Hero this year. You will see GI Joe licensed characters from Loyal Subjects, Funko Pop and possibly others. However, there will sadly be no 3 3/4" or 4" modern era action figure line up.

The Loyal Subjects and Funko Pop Vinyl figures look great. I'll probably pick up a few, especially that FANG.

The post goes on to say we may never see a big return to retail without movie support. This is just the way retail operates now. All the top-selling toys on the shelf have either a live action show or cartoon on television, or a movie in the theater. The problem there is the GI Joe movies are bad. They very, very loosely follow the almost 35-year history of the Real American Hero. In fact, they stray so far from the source material the first movie was nearly unrecognizable. GI Joe The Rise of Cobra received mostly negative reviews but was profitable enough to warrant a squeal. However, it was such an unpleasant or embarrassing film to apparently be a part of only a few of the cast members returned for the squeal. Fortunately for those involved GI Joe has a deep roster, and suitable replacement Joes were easy to find. GI Joe Retaliation was more successful at the box office, possibly due to the inclusion of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as Roadblock, while at the same time taking a worse beating from the critics. At least GI Joe Retaliation had a decent looking Cobra Commander.

Hasbro has taken a new direction with their Transformers franchise by establishing a "writer's room" and planning out the next ensemble installments as well as solo spin-offs like the recently announced Bumblebee film. Now, I'm no fan of the Transformer movies but this new direction sounds promising. I doubt the movies could get worse. Due to the perceived success of the "writer's room," Hasbro will take a similar approach with GI Joe. Hopefully, this time, they'll follow the source material.

A more exciting bit of news in the post from hisstank.com is the announcement of a 2016 San Diego Comic Con exclusive. There is no word on what it will be, but rest assure the SDCC exclusives have always satisfied the fans and have been in high demand. We'll have to wait for more details and even longer to perhaps purchase from the 2016 San Diego Comic Con, which takes place from July 21st to the 24th.

The crown jewel of my humble collection are the 2011, 2012, and 2013 SDCC GI Joe/Transformers crossovers.
