Guardians of the Galaxy and Masters of the Universe

Only a couple weeks to go before Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 premieres, on May 5th. The trailers look great and follow the same template as before, pairing action as well as exposition, and humor to a pulse-pounding soundtrack. This time the soundtrack will include hits from Electric Light Orchestra, Cheap Trick, and even David Hasselhoff. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 sits comfortably at 86% on rottentomatoes.com and is predicted to make between $85 - $100 million on opening weekend. Even after the Iron Fist debacle and harsh criticisms, the Marvel Cinematic Universe remains unstoppable.

The official synopsis is out, and scores of nerds have picked apart the trailers to discover even more details and post theories, so not many secrets remain. Even Sylvester Stallone's secret cameo has been revealed after months of speculation, but I'm not certain who the Marvel character he is portraying in the film is and I refrained from reading the detailed description and history the character shares with the Guardians of the Galaxy. One secret still under lock and key is whether or not Ego the Living Planet will make an appearance in his planetary form and not just in a humanoid form.

Another question still on my mind concerns the introduction of Beta Ray Bill into the MCU. In the opening segment of Guardians of the Galaxy, Chris Pratt as Peter Quill aka Star-Lord dances with a Korbinite skeleton, the human-like alien race with horse-like heads. Definitively establishing the Korbinites as part of the MCU, so it seemed like a matter of time before the champion of the Korbinites, and one of the few Non-Asgardians to lift Thor's hammer Mjolnir and bestowed with the God of Thunder's powers, would appear. However Guardians of the Galaxy was released in 2014, that's three years and four MCU movies ago. Unless Marvel is either saving Beta Ray Bill for the big showdown with Thanos in Avengers Infinity War or not using him at all (huge missed opportunity) the safest bet for the introduction of Beta Ray Bill would be in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 or this November in Thor Ragnarok. As you might have guessed I am REALLY anxious for Beta Ray Bill to make his MCU debut.

After decades in development hell, Sony Pictures have at last made concrete plans to bring He-Man and the Masters of the Universe back to the big screen. A release date has been set for December 18th, 2019. I've waited a long, long time for a He-Man movie to come along and redeem the legacy of the brand that the Dolph Lundgren starring film tarnished in 1987. Properties from the 1980's such as Transformers, GI Joe, TMNT and more are once again very popular in comics, television and at the box office, and it seemed that He-Man which preceded all those mentioned remained frozen in time. True, a new He-Man and the Masters of the Universe cartoon premiered on Cartoon Network in 2002 to accompany the re-release of a line of amazingly well-done redesigned action figures but it only lasted three seasons. A new comic book released around the same time couldn't find an audience either and re-booted to a new volume rather frequently, eventually getting canceled.

Why is Sony green-lighting a nostalgic property that failed to generate interest not too long ago? Some entertainment industry insiders are speculating that the massive popularity of the Thor Ragnarok teaser and the film's predicted box office domination was the catalyst. He-Man and the MOTU do share the same combination of barbarianesque sword fights, sorcery, and futuristic technology as Marvel's Thor. With a deep catalog of unique characters and a mythology that rivals the Transformer's centuries old war between Autobot and Decepticon or GI Joes never-ending struggle to preserve the freedom Cobra wishes to replace with tyranny, Sony has a potential mega-franchise on its hands. Most likely with character spotlight spin-offs and an interconnected cinematic universe, since that's all the rage nowadays.
