Yeah, Captain America Civil War is amazing!

I was completely blown away. The 2.5 hour long movie never disappointed for a single minute. I'll try to review it without spoilers. Captain America Civil War starts out with a high-stakes espionage  scene that competes with popular movies of that genre. Displaying the spy training of a SHIELD Agent, spectacular chases, amazing fights and the teamwork of the second generation of Avengers we saw assemble at the end Avengers 2 Age of Ultron. It is that movie the sets the tone for this sequel. After an unfortunate accident in that astounding opening sequence, the governments of the world have had enough of the brazen actions of enhanced superheroes acting on their own volition. The option the governments came up with to regulate their actions is what causes the divide between Team Captain America and Team Iron Man.

That opening scene was well paced, with first-rate acting and masterfully directed by brothers Joe and Anthony Russo. That blend never stopped until the stinger at the end of the credits faded to black. Captain America Civil War seamlessly shifted between espionage thriller, political drama, and awe-inspiring action, with a good bit of light-hearted comedy and even a glimmer of romance. The introduction of T’Challa/Black Panther was well done, giving him a laser-like focus that set him on his path. Bringing Ant-Man in provided the connection to the larger MCU, as well as loads of one-liners. But Ant-Man wasn't pure comic relief, he also provided some great action sequences...and maybe one of the most crowd-pleasing scenes in the film.

What can I say about Spider-Man. I always thought Tobey Maguire made a great Peter Parker but a lousy Spider-Man. Likewise, I thought Andrew Garfield was fine as Spider-Man but dreadful as Peter Parker. This new interpretation of the web-slinging wall-crawler, played by 19-year-old Tom Holland was perfect in both roles. It was so exciting to see Spidey with the Avengers in an actual Marvel Movie instead of the lackluster films Sony had been producing. With Tom Holland's portrayal, the events Captain America Civil War set into motion and with Marvel assisting in Sony's third reboot of the franchise I am excited for Spider-Man Homecoming in July of 2017.

Captain America Civil War is an amazing movie, and even at 2.5 hours long I wanted more. It is definitely worthy of the hype as it may just be the best movie from Marvel/Disney yet. It does deviate from the comic book arc that heavily inspired the film, but the directions it takes are very similar. It is no mistake that the next four Marvel films, five if you count the aforementioned Spider-Man Homecoming, will keep the Avengers disassembled. It will take some time and the threat of The Mad Titan, Thanos to bring them back together for Avengers 3 Infinity War in May of 2018.

Will Captain America Civil War be the biggest blockbuster of the summer. I'd place my bet on yes. The film has already brought in over $260 million internationally and has yet to open in a few key markets, most notably China. The projections for the film's domestic opening weekend are around $200 million. With the overwhelmingly good reviews, currently rated at 91% on rottentomatoes.com, and the positive word of mouth Captain America Civil War may pass Marvel's current box office champion The Avengers. It doesn't hurt that the film will go pretty much unopposed until X-Men Apocalyse comes out on May 27th. Virtually guaranteeing three weeks at #1.

Captain America Civil War will have begun to slow down at the box office by the time X-Men Apocalypse comes out so the Mutant film should overtake the #1 spot. However, the X-Men film will have direct competition from Alice Through the Looking Glass, which opens on the same day. This clash will hurt 20th Century Fox's opening weekend take, which in turn will hurt it's ability to overtake Captain America Civil War as the summer's biggest blockbuster. Alice Through the Looking Glass is also produced by Disney. I wonder if they planned on that.

DC's Suicide Squad looks to be a big box office hit. But after the dismal performance of Batman v Superman including the unprecedented 81% drop from first to second Friday, I highly doubt Suicide Squad will topple Captain America Civil War as this summer's biggest movie. Nothing else on the radar for the blockbuster season will even come close.
